A Case Study on a Skin Care App Made for You

PROJECT BRIEF

Create a case study of a UX/UI app that uses enhanced AI technology.

ROLE

UX/UI Designer

DATE

May 2024

THE PROBLEM

With the growing interest in self-care, healthy skin, and the influence of social media, skincare has become a popular essential in everyday routines. However, with the overload of information, itโ€™s often a challenge for beginners to find suitable products without investing time in extensive research and trial and error.

THE SOLUTION

This research aims to find a solution that proposes an integrated service using user data to promote a clear and effective way of navigating individual skincare needs and allowing beginner skincare users to purchase skincare products confidently.

PHASE 1: RESEARCH PROPOSAL

RESEARCH QUESTION

If beginner skincare users are struggling to find the skincare product that works for them, how can camera/AI technology be used to make finding skincare products more convenient and reduce the amount of time and money wasted on trial and error approaches?

HYPOTHESIS

It is hypothesized that novice skincare users will be satisfied with their skincare purchases by following the โ€œstep-by-stepโ€ instructions through enhanced camera features in an interactive smartphone app.

PROPOSAL STATEMENT

With the growing interest in self-care, healthy skin, and the influence of social media, skincare has become a popular essential in everyday routines. However, with the overload of information, it’s often a challenge for beginners to find suitable products without investing time in extensive research and trial and error attempts. Thus, this research aims to find a solution that proposes an integrated service using user data to promote a clear and effective way of navigating individual skincare needs and allowing beginner skincare users to confidently purchase skincare products.

PHASE 2: USER FLOW CHART

PRIMARY USER TASK

Jenna is a young adult trying to shop for a new face wash to improve her skin.

USER JOURNEY

S1: Jenna has been facing breakouts after using a popular skincare product from social media. She stumbles upon an ad that will improve her skin.

S2: Interested in the appโ€™s ability to tailor to unique skin needs and analyze products, Jenna clicks the link and installs the app.

S3: After installing the app, Jenna sees a landing page that allows her the option to sign in or create a new account.

S4: Jenna creates an account that allows her to access skincare information.

S5: After logging in, Jenna clicks on the camera feature.

S6: Jenna chooses the Skin Analysis option to get more information on her skin.

S7: The camera scans her face and provides an in-depth analysis of her skin type and the best products for her skin.

S8: After completing the skin analysis, Jenna finds a face wash at a store that could be well suited for her. To confirm this theory, Jenna follows the instructions to scan a product.

S9: Jenna scans the productโ€™s barcode, and a screen pops up with the productโ€™s information and how beneficial it is for Jennaโ€™s skin.

S10: Jenna sees that the product is well-suited for her and adds it to her shopping cart.

S11: Jenna has completed her task.

pROJECT OUTCOME

Overall, this case study improved my critical thinking skills, prioritizing effective, easy-to-navigate designs over aesthetics. I enjoyed the research process as I got more comfortable getting to know my target audience. This was crucial to creating an app where the user could navigate easily. Through this case study, my passion for UX/UI design grew.
